On 26 September 2017, EUPOL COPPS facilitated the first International Community Policing Conference in Ramallah, which focused on education to the Palestinian citizens on the implementation of the Palestinian-led Community Policing concept. Over 120 people were invited to the two-day event, including representatives from civil society, over 50 high-ranking Palestinian Civil Police officers (PCP), EUPOL COPPS advisers and other international coordinating partners. The main goals of the conference, which were introduced on Tuesday, are: mobilizing the community to actively engage in the partnership process to help solve community problems and to support on-going development and sustainability of community policing concept and lessons learned from the International community. In his closing speech, Acting Head of EUPOL COPPS Mission Bo Holtse praised the outcome of the conference and the fruitful discussion it had triggered among the attendees. “I have no doubt that the outcome from yesterday’s deliberations will be a valued input into future community policing implementation planning,” Mr. Holtse told the audience. The conference was co-organized in partnership with PCP, EUPOLCOPPS Police Advisory Section and the British Support Team/United States Security Coordinator (USSC). Representatives from civil society other international organizations such as DCAF, UNDP and GIZ working in Palestine supported the conference. Community Policing is a coordinated partnership approach between the police and the communities in the towns and villages they serve to protect. Community policing shall improve community safety by reducing crime and tackling anti-social behaviour within Palestine.
