Meeting those who makes a difference every day

These weeks, Sally MacKinnon, the Mission’s Police Adviser dealing with the Family Protection Units of the Palestinian Civil Police, is conducting a series of field trips to meet with the staff of the Family Protection and Juvenile Departments in the Police Districts across the West Bank and familiarize herself with the Women’s Shelters there.

“I began my field trips last week, and was very well received by the Family Protection and Juvenile Units (FJPD). The visits are a great opportunity for me to meet the people, who are responsible for the important FJPD work on the ground. Every day, these officers and the people in the shelters make a huge difference in the lives of Palestinians who face problems, violence or carelessness in their community or family. Their work can never be underestimated. I will be continuing my tour in the coming weeks, visiting a district a week until they are all completed”, says Sally MacKinnon.

The two fist visits took place on 29 and 30 January 2019 to the Jericho and Bethlehem Police Districts. The purpose was networking, meeting the district personnel face to face and opening doors for future collaboration and engagement. The visits also provided a framework to constructively discuss the challenges and issues facing the FJPD.

In Jericho the Mission’s Advisor was warmly received by the District Commander, Colonel Bassem Walsed. She also met with Lieutenant Colonel Muntaer Bani Odeh, who is in charge of the FPJD in Jericho. The visit included a guided tour of the Women’s Centre for Legal Aid and Counselling Emergency Shelter in Jericho with the opportunity to meet the head of the Shelter, Dima Nashashibi. In Bethlehem, Lieutenant Colonel Sufyan Zahlan, who is in charge of the FPJD in the Bethlehem District welcomed Sally MacKinnon and introduced her to the activities and accomplishments of the unit.
