New Civilian Operations Commander appointed

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy//Vice-President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini yesterday announced the appointment of Mr Vincenzo Coppola as the Director for the Civilian Planning and Conduct Capability of the European External Action Service and as Civilian Operations Commander.

As Civilian Operations Commander, Vincenzo Coppola will take strategic leadership of the EU’s currently 10 civilian Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) Missions on three continents: the Palestinian Territories (Ramallah and Rafah), Iraq, Libya, Niger, Mali, the Horn of Africa (Somalia & Somaliland), Ukraine, Georgia, and Kosovo.

Most recently Mr Coppola served as Deputy Commanding General of the Italian Carabinieri.

At the same time, Sofie From-Emmesberger was appointed as new Chair of the Political and Security Committee, responsible for the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP).
