The Mission’s Senior Management updated on gender mainstreaming in the Palestinian police

Since the start of its activities in 2006, the Mission has supported the Palestinian Civil Police in its efforts towards gender mainstreaming and equality. The development of specialized services, such as the Family Protection and Juvenile Unit and women’s participation form an important part of this work.

To discuss the status and recent developments on gender mainstreaming within the Palestinian Civil Police, the Head of Mission, Kauko Aaltomaa, together with the Deputy Head of Mission, Dr. Katja Dominik and Head of the Police Advisory Section, Pekka Kokkonen welcomed a group of senior women Police Officers to the Mission’s Headquarters.

A diverse police force contributes better
The Head of Mission applauded the work of the female Police Officers and their efforts to challenge stereotypes and climb through the ranks. He also commended the Palestinian Civil Police leadership for being the frontrunner amongst Palestinian security institutions in terms of gender mainstreaming and the promotion of women’s rights and equality. Some challenges still remain
Finally, the Senior Management discussed with the female police officers, the challenges remaining such as women’s access to the highest leadership positions and to certain operational tasks as well as the difference in social benefits and retirement privileges between male and female Police Officers.

The Mission will continue to work with and support women Police Officers and the PCP to overcome these barriers.
