New Head of the Mission’s Police Advisory Section attends Security Sector Working Group meeting

Pekka Kokkonen, who joined the Mission on 2 July 2018 as Head of the Police Advisory Section, led the EUPOL COPPS delegation attending the Security Sector Working Group (SSWG) meeting in Jericho on 11 July 2018.

The Working Group meeting took place at the so-called ‘technical expert level’ and was led by the Mohammad Al Jibrini, Security Assistant to the Minister of Interior of the Palestinian Authority. The participation in the SSWG falls under the Mission’s mandate according to which, the Mission shall contribute to the establishment of sustainable and effective policing arrangements under Palestinian ownership, in accordance with the best international standards.

“The importance of this high-level forum for security sector consultations cannot be overestimated. The essential work of implementing the Palestinian Security Sector Strategic Plan 2017-2022 is closely monitored by the Working Group and reflected in the Working Group’s Annual Work Plan. Today we discussed the progress pertaining to both documents and we will continue to follow the developments”, said Police Chief Superintendent Pekka Kokkonen after the meeting.

The main purpose of the Working Group is to act as a forum for coordination and exchange of information between donors and the Palestinian Authority on issues related to security. The Working Group also has the overall the responsibility for leading the strategic discussions affecting the coordination of the security sector reform in Palestine with the aim to strengthen the Palestinian security sector institutions.
