New Head of EUPOL COPPS Mission takes up duties

Mr. Kauko Aaltomaa, a high-ranking official in the Finnish Ministry of Interior, took up his duties today as Head of the European Union Police Mission for the Palestinian Territories (EUPOL COPPS).
Mr. Kenneth Deane, Director, Civilian Planning & Conduct Capability/Civilian Operations, introduced the new Head of Mission to staff members.
Mr. Aaltomaa told his team that “EUPOL COPPS family will work hard to serve the Palestinian counterparts.”
He has worked for 37 years in the Finnish Police and the Ministry of the Interior. Before assuming his new post, he was working as Director General in the Police Department of the Ministry of the Interior in Finland, where his responsibilities include strategic performance guidance of the Finnish Police and Security Intelligence Service.
During his career, Aaltomaa has worked as the Police Commissioner of the Provincial Police Command of Southern Finland. He has also worked in UN missions in the Middle East.
EUPOL COPPS has been assisting the Palestinian Authority in building the institutions of a future state of Palestine in the areas of policing and criminal justice since January 2006.
Through its contribution to security and justice sector reform, the Mission supports efforts to increase the security of the Palestinian population and to reinforce the rule of law. EUPOL COPPS's current mandate runs until 30 June 2018. The headquarters of the mission are located in Ramallah.
