Ramallah, 8 March 2017 - Today, we celebrate International Women’s Day, a day to honour the worldwide achievements made by women and men to advance gender equality.
The world has witnessed a significant change and attidunal shift in both women's and society's conceptions about women's equality and emancipation. Many women and men from a younger generation have taken up 'the battles' of previous generations related to the ingrained complexity of patriarchy. With more women in leading positions, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increased critical mass of women's visibility as impressive role models in every aspect of life, one could think that women have gained true equality.
EUPOL COPPS recognises however the fact that women are still not present in equal numbers in government, business or politics, that women lack equal opportunities in education and health care, and the violence against women is still not addressed with appropriate measures.
EUPOL COPPS supports its Palestinian partners in the Security and Justice sectors in developing and implementing gender oriented policies. It also supports the development of institutions with the goal to prevent and combat violence against women and children.
The Acting Head of Mission, Mike Albers, welcomes the efforts exerted by the Palestinian Civil Police (PCP) and by the criminal justice institutions and the progress they achieved in empowering women. "EUPOL COPPS is strongly committed to continue its cooperation with its Palestinian partners to promote gender equality, and to strengthen the operational work of the police and justice sector institutions within the area of gender-based violence.”
Our Mission has witnessed development in this area through the adoption of a new Gender Strategy for the PCP. The Mission also supports dedicated trainings for the appointed specialised prosecutors and judges on gender-based violence. The Mission also takes part in the efforts to combat violence against women through supporting the legislative process.
The European Union is dedicated to the goals set in the 1325 United Nation’s Council Resolutions on Women, Peace and Security, in which EUPOL COPPS plays a pivotal role within its mandate in the West Bank.
EUPOL COPPS supports all efforts to ensure that the future for Palestinian girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding by increasing the awareness of gender equality in order to improve the lives of both women and men that work for their country and the implementation of rule of law.
