EUPOL COPPS supports Prosecutors’ Annual Conference

Bethlehem, 12th December 2010 - An EUPOL COPPS delegation, led by its Head of Mission, Commissioner Henrik MALMQUIST, attended the Palestinian Public Prosecution Annual Conference 2010 that took place in Bethlehem.
The Attorney General, H.E. Ahmed AL MUGHANNI, thanked EUPOL COPPS for its support and acknowledged the “benefits of sending Prosecutors abroad, where they can see how the Prosecution operates in other countries”.
Recently, seven economic crime prosecutors from the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) were taken by the Mission’s prosecution experts to a study-trip to Finland, where they had the chance to experience the Finnish model. Also last September two Palestinian prosecutors participated in a conference at The Hague for members of International Association of Prosecutors.
The training obtained throughout this trip provided the trainees with practical examples of evidence admissibility, evaluation of evidence, asset tracing, international cooperation, modern investigation methods and coordination between the Finnish Prosecution and Police authorities assigned to investigate and prosecute economic crimes.
During his intervention, Commissioner MALMQUIST highlighted the work being done in the field of anti-corruption, mentioning that: “concerning anti-corruption and money laundering training, EUPOL COPPS has developed a training programme along with the Attorney General and Seyada” (Seyada is an EC-funded assistance programme in the field of Rule of Law).
He also emphasized the progress achieved after the signature if the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Attorney General’s Office and the Palestinian Civil Police (PCP), whose implementation should promote the AGO’s cooperation with the PCP in pre-trial criminal investigations.
The Palestinian Public Prosecution Annual Conference 2010 is supported principally by the US State Department’s Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL) and also by EUPOL COPPS.
